Projects.

My students undertake creative and interactive projects to enhance their education.
Public Art Designs.

After discussing images of public art in class and the symbols, shapes, colors, and locations artists chose for their works, some students in my Fall 2012 American Cities class at Lake Forest College chose to design public art installations for part of their final exam.

They were asked to pick a location for their installation and provide not only a sketch of the design, but a short essay, explaining the symbolism and meaning behind their designs.

Urban Photo Project.

Each semester I ask students to take a day to explore and take pictures in the city. They pick a theme - anything from something like "nature in the city" to "blue" - and then create a photo exhibit with their images.

During a class period, students set up their exhibits and we take time to explore each other's views of the city. Prizes, voted on by the students, are awarded for Best Picture and Best Exhibit. Even for students who have never considered themselves photgraphers, this projects asks them to use a new eye to study their surroundings.

Cultural Reviews.

Some students flex their writing skills and write professional-style reviews of theater, opera, dance, and symphony performances and art exhibits they attend.

Students are always encouraged to Tweet (at intermission!) from performances and exhibits so keep an eye on the social media page for live commentary on Chicago's cultural scene.
